Turn the volume knob to full volume and measure the resistance  
between pins 1 and 3 of the XLR connector, or plug in your cable and  
measure it between the two connectors of the 1/4" plug. Don't do this  
if you have a really old analog volt meter because it might just zap  
the element. Any new digital one should be fine.

Most pots have their value stamped  or printed on them so you can  
also open up the mic and look - however it may be around the back side.
