Hello everyone,
I wanted to let you all know about some recent changes to the
harmonica ensemble class at the Jazzschool in Berkeley, Ca. this summer.
Starting Saturday, July 19th at the Jazzschool, I've revamped the
description of the course. Now, instead of a class of only students
led by one teacher, the ensemble will feature and be taught by:
Michael Peloquin:
Michael is a stalwart of the Bay Area Blues and R&B scenes. He's
also a great jazz player and arranger with a resume to back it all up.
Winner of the 1997 Hohner Harmonica World Championship, held in
Trossingen, Germany. Check his website:
http://www.harpsax.com/ or google his name.
Winslow Yerxa:
At age fourteen, Winslow Yerxa discovered the harmonica. Since
then, he's played blues, jazz, country, fiddle tunes, classical and
several other styles on the harmonica, performing on street corners,
in nightclubs, recording studios, theater pits, and concert stages in
settings ranging from solo performance to hundred-piece orchestras. As
a teacher and seminar speaker, in books, magazine articles,
instructional CDs and videos, and in Internet discussion groups, he
works to spread information and understanding among all those who
hunger to play, understand, and appreciate the harmonica. Google his
name for more!
Steve Malerbi:
He's played harmonica for 35 years, the chromatic for 20 years,
and is well known in "the community" as a harmonica tech and
customizer. He currently performing with several Bay Area projects,
and leads his own group, "Harmonica Jazz". He's also a gigging drummer!
and of course myself.
The class will cost the same!
This came out of an idea of forming the top players in the Bay Area
for a harmonica ensemble, and using the Jazzschool and their harmonica
program as a home base for the group. The class will work like any
other, so enrollment from a number of interested students is required
to keep it open. We are not doing it for money, obviously, but to use
it as a catalyst for the group, and to offer any students and lovers
of the harmonica an opportunity to play fun and challenging
arrangements.
All of the music is charted and written and out, so if you don't
read, you can still sign up, but bring a recording device and be
prepared to work.
If you were dragging your heels about studying harmonica at the
Jazzschool before, you've got 3 more reasons to come down!
