Re: [Harp-L] Re: The Getaway

I'll have to hear it sometime. Danny and both know Tommy. I can usually spot his sound .

It is not unusual for studio players to go uncredited while Toot's name has marqee value.

The credit roll at the end of the movie says:

"Harmonica Solos....... Toots Thielemans"

In fact, it is the very first credit of the film, before even Steve
McQueen. Nowhere in the credits does it mention Tommy Morgan.

The bass harp lines in the film can only be described as solos. So, I made
the reasonable association that Toots had played the bass harmonica solos.
Sorry if this offended anyone.

Be that as it may, the harp soundtrack in the movie is terrific, and Steve
McQueen is great in the movie. As I said before... Highly recommended.

"On the topic of harp in the movies...

I just watched the move 'The Getaway' (the 1972 original with Steve
McQueen and Ali MacGraw, not the lame remake with Alec Baldwin). The
soundtrack was dominated by bass harp sounds played by Toots! Perfect
texture and tension for the movie. Very highly recommended.

Not accurate with regard to "who did what" in the film. It is correct
that Toots played chromatic in the 1972 film "The Getaway," but did not
play the bass harmonica in the film. Toots Thielemans does not play bass
harmonica, nor does he claim to do so. His seat-mate in the studio
session for those 3 days was none other than Tommy Morgan, who did play
all the bass harmonica in the film, as he did in many films, TV shows,
etc.

Quincy Jones was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original
Score.
