Re: [Harp-L] Neumann TLM 103 vs Rode K2 mics for recording

The Rode K2

Any comments from those who have actual experience with these mics?

I used the K2 for all the harmonica on Music For Small Audience, pumped through an ART tube pre. I molded my sound around this setup. I liked it well enough to use it, and no more than that.

(As hoped, my mixing engineer found a way to beef it up and smooth it out, and my mastering guy really gave it a finish that I'm satisfied with. This means that the sound you heard on my CD IS in the Rode, it just had to be goosed out in post. You will probably be able to find some great recipes at the recording stage by working with it alot. I wish I could have afforded to record the harp with great mics, in the master studio, the way I did with the guitar and vox.)

In Richard's reply he recommends using both mics you ask about. I try to use two mics on everything when I'm in the master studio for anything I'm recording, and I add in a direct box for the guitar, all to seperate tracks. This gives you alot to monkey with as long as you place the mics carefully, so as to avoid phase problems.

The secret is to make damn sure that one of these mics gives you a high, mid, or low that you really like, and that the other does the same with the two ranges that are not that satisfying in the first mic. I.e., if neither mic gives you a satisfing high end, for instance, it's not the right two mics.
