I did some recording work in Muscle Shoals with a drummer named Roger 
Clark, a master musician.

He had just come back from a few days in Tulsa where he auditioned for Leon 
Russell's band.  Leon told him that he was too good, that Leon needed to be 
the star musician on the stage.

That must be why Leon used Gary Busey, who played well but not lethally so.

Anybody got any choice tales of not getting the gig for the wrong reason?
