My annual or semi-annual maintenance routine for my diatonics involves
taking the harps apart and scrubbing the reedplates with a toothbrush
and toothpaste to remove gunk.
I do think the harps sound better afterwards. I once discussed this
procedure with Howard Levy, and he agreed that in theory at least the
sound should be less dull once deposits are removed from the reeds and
plates.
My guess is that the very best way to go is dunking the harp in one of
those ultrasonic pulse cleaning devices that some members of this list
have mentioned, but I haven't gotten around to buying one. Maybe I'm
just afraid to look at the fluid after I run a plate through it.
