[Harp-L] Re: SPAH photos

Hi, Randy. Wow, that's a lot, and I agree you shouldn't have to deal with them individually. That's too much work.

Really, I'm not the expert. My friend Bill came up with smugmug, and I've never used it. Now, here's an observation. To show photos on the internet (or in a slideshow) you don't need to transmit a lot of data. You can cut the size (resolution) to something like 640 x 480 pixels, and it'll look fine. That may require that you transmit only around 10% of the data from your originals. However, if you intend to allow people to print, either in your newsletter or from a site such as smugmug, you'd better transmit at your original resolution (they call it SIZE), which is way more data. I have the feeling that sites like smugmug are not limited in storage space or speed of reception, so much as you might be in transmition speed, or time or patience. Also consider, are club members going to value all 150 photos as you do? If they tell a good story, the photos are probably worthwhile. Still, keep in mind your other members have photos too, and pretty soon you'll have 1000 photos on the site, and no one will have the patience to go through them all, including yours. Think seriously of culling some out.

I've found in the past that even at the lower resolution, I've had to cut the number of photos to 20, or even 10, per email message.

Although I'm honored that you asked me, I don't have the answers to all your questions. Besides, my own computer/photo program has been on the fritz. Why not look up smugmug and find out, for the Society?

I hope that this can incorporate one important element.-----the
ability to upload a batch of photos at the same time.

for example, I have 150 spah photos (and some videos).

It would be impossible for me(time-wise) to upload each one
individually. I would want to upload all 150 at the same time.

do u think this is a possibility?

thankssssssss

Suddenly it's like a whole 'nother world. You guys have names for

You even went so far as to number the holes so you could describe
how they work, and the subtle differences between them. A clever idea.

In message #4 of Issue 49, Marc Molina suggested to Randy Singer
that someone set up a flickr group to post members' photos and make
them accessible. Recently I've had considerable success posting my
sporting event photos on my friend Bill's website. Since Bill is an
experienced webmaster, I emailed him and asked whether he would be
interested in participating. Although he declined, his answer is
worth your attention.

"Interesting. Not something I'd want to get into (ie.
Webmastering / photo guru); not enough time to take on more at this
point. But it sounds like [Marc] might be on the right track
regarding posting photos for all the group to see. He mentions
flickr.com - that may be what they would want to do. Or something
like smugmug.com for posting photos. I don't know too much about
flickr, but smugmug I do. There is a small fee for the year to
house photos at smugmug, but they also offer a printing service as
well. That's what I would recommend to them."

It seems to me, someone in the club should just do it, and fast.
First get the approval of club management, then set it up and
either control or monitor it so it doesn't get abused. Do it on a
trial basis initially, then make changes as required. I know from
experience that interest in the photographs will wane in a few days.
