[Harp-L] rap and harmonica
J,
This is a combination I've been curious about, too. I thought I read
somewhere that rapper Nas's father, the trumpeter Olu Dara did some
harmonica work (maybe on a Ludicrous track somewhere), but I've been unable
to find a sample. I did come across a YouTube piece w/ Taylor Hicks on
harmonica joining Snoop Dog on "Gin & Juice", but the sound quality was so
poor I didn't even really hear the harmonica. I could see harmonica adding
something to more melodious songs like Blackalicious's "Side to Side", but
other than that, I've only heard it used in a kind of beatbox fashion.
Is this the first Chuck D quote on Harp-L?

Then I will continue my quest to find ways to incorporate the harmonica with
today's rap music. Perhaps my previous attempts had missed the part about
"with judgment and good taste". Most of my efforts sounded far more idiotic
than idiomatic.
Anyone else have any success with this or even try it? (...he asks, and
braces himself for the anticipated responses.)
