After countless times of trying to hear myself on stage I recently
started using the same set up as James.
I place the amp on an amp stand in front of me using it like a monitor.
My current gigging amp is a 15 watter. I added a line out so I can plug
it into a direct box then into the pa. I use this set up for all gig
situations whether in a bar or on a large concert stage. It may take a
few sets to get the level right. I turn the volume loud enough so I can
hear myself and let the guy running the board set the level for out
front. Have the guy running sound put you in the monitor mix if you need
more stage volume.

SJ, a simple setup that works for me when playing electric (for which I
use an amp that's probably no more than 6W) is one of those tilt amp
stands, I point the amp right up at me and mic the amp through the PA.
this basically make my amp my stage monitor... leaving the soundman to
worry about the house. The soundman should have plenty to work with as
far as volume from your miced amp, and if they don't get you in the mix
after that, it's a human issue and no equipment's going to solve that.
