[Harp-L] Amp as Monitor w/PA

Mike

When you do this, can you hear the amp sufficiently since it's in front of you? Why not put it behind, feedback? Or is it pointed at you in this case, rather than the audience, like a stage monitor (which is what i'm guessing now that i thought about it for a few milliseconds, that's what you meant by "using it like a monitor", duh).

Ok, so do you feel like you're losing something in the sound by not having what the audience hears come through your speaker cone, which based on discussions I've heard here is an important part of the amp's sound? Hell I've heard you enough to know you could sound good through a tin can, but I was curious about that. It could be a bit misleading that *you* are hearing the true amp sound, and maybe what they are hearing isnt' as good because of this?

I changed the subject back from "digest" to something more meaningful :-)

After countless times of trying to hear myself on stage I recently started using the same set up as James.
I place the amp on an amp stand in front of me using it like a monitor. My current gigging amp is a 15 watter. I added a line out so I can plug it into a direct box then into the pa. I use this set up for all gig situations whether in a bar or on a large concert stage. It may take a few sets to get the level right. I turn the volume loud enough so I can hear myself and let the guy running the board set the level for out front. Have the guy running sound put you in the monitor mix if you need more stage volume.

SJ, a simple setup that works for me when playing electric (for which I use an amp that's probably no more than 6W) is one of those tilt amp stands, I point the amp right up at me and mic the amp through the PA. this basically make my amp my stage monitor... leaving the soundman to worry about the house. The soundman should have plenty to work with as far as volume from your miced amp, and if they don't get you in the mix after that, it's a human issue and no equipment's going to solve that.
