Magic Dick did a lot of tongue blocking. Which technique he used at any
given point in any recording is something I don't know.
That first J. Geils album is my favorite of all their releases. In
particular, I was extremely impressed by the way that Magic Dick
inserted the harp right into the rhythm section, as opposed to riding on
top the way players in traditional blues bands mostly do. When I met
Seth Justman, keyboard player for the Geils band, in the summer of 2004,
he confirmed that the approach was intentional. Dick's rhythmic
precision, which J.J. Milteau discussed in an interview a few years
back, was key to that approach. And of course, his tone was VERY
impressive.
