Re: [Harp-L] "playing"

down boy,,

"adding to the discussion" is all in the eye of the beholder. I've not
called Mr. Ross a "stuft-shirt elitist", nor have I "missed his point".
People who set themselves up as judges need to first of all have a bench.

I apologize for having offended your sense of sensibility. I just happen to
think that music is fun, whether it be "serious" music, or playful,
outrageous music, and rather than becoming exclusive in my tastes, I have
chosen to become rather inclusive, for fear of developing a narrow heart.

Harmonica in general has never been considered primarily a "classical"
instrument, though it depends on your definition of "classical". Robert
Bonfiglio has an outstanding reputation in classically exercised chromatic,
and I've sent several of his clips of his to my son, who performs on
classical guitar, for his perusing. My son isn't especially fond of the
harmonica sound in an orchestral setting, however, so I gave up trying to
"legitimize" the harmonica to him in specific. However, I personally try to
learn to appreciate the good in every form of music, classical or otherwise,
in an effort to treat music as a "language", meant to foster communication
and, as a result, community. As I try to learn something in every language I
come into contact with, I also try to learn the nuances and heart-strings of
every kind of music.

I am here at this time only to make a case for the legitimacy of the
diatonic harmonica being played chromatically, as the discussion has
progressed. If I am wrong having an opinion, then let me be wrong.

To each his/her own.

If you bark at me like a dog, I may just run away. Then you can continue to
have this forum for your very own, fjm. There's lots of room on this planet
for all of us.
