Re: [Harp-L] Coltrane and Ballads- creative inspirations

The tune by Junior Wells is a cover of an SBWI song.

IMHO, covers can be interesting and sometimes better than the original. In jazz very few people have recorded the definitive version of a standard. I still remember vividly the first time I heard "Cherokee" by Marcus Roberts. Which version of of "Born to Lose" is better, Tad Daffan's original or the one by Ray Charles? "Stagolee" (really the identical song) by Archibald or Lloyd Price? "Respect" by Otis Redding or Aretha Franklin? "All around the World" by Little Willie John or Little Milton? "Checking up on My Baby" by SBWI or SBWII? I think it was Pat Boone that gave covers a bad name. <g>

It's never too late to do something your parents didn't want you to do. When that time comes Barrelhouse Solly will be there for you. He cares.

your first choice is interesting. is that "Steady" as
in Jerry McCain's instrumental? if so, it's unusual
(to me anyway) that people prefer covers to originals.
while maybe no longer my faves, here's the top five
that made me want to play:

1.) Thirteen Years in Prison - Big Leon Brooks
2.) all the cuts from Claptons "From the Cradle" -
Jerry Portnoy
3.) C-Boy's Blues - Kim Wilson
4.) My Home is a Prison - Sugar Ray Norcia
5.) Hoodoo Man - Jr. Wells
