Thanks for your replies on and off list to me recent question about
playing professionally. I'd like to offer this to the list:
Check out Gary Primich if you haven't already! He is a fantastic
contemporary player. He primarily plays blues seasoned with a variety of
other styles. "Fat tone" immediately comes to mind. I love his solos -
he typically plays a few bars of some licks that are very simple but quite
expressive, before he hits you with a searing crescendo involving a lot of
originality. And he'll go on to build more tension from there before he
sets everything on fire (the solo on "Ain't You Trouble Baby" is a fine
example)! Indeed he has a very effective way of building and releasing
tension. I've learned to play a handful of his solos and themes, which
has helped me discover ways to use bends on draw 3 and draw 6 that I had
never conceived of (in particular, learning to play "Turn Your Damper
Down" has helped in these areas). Both the songs I mentioned are on the
"Company Man" disc.
