[Harp-L] Gary Primich appreciation
Thanks for your replies on and off list to me recent question about
playing professionally. I'd like to offer this to the list:
Check out Gary Primich if you haven't already! He is a fantastic
contemporary player. He primarily plays blues seasoned with a variety
of other styles. "Fat tone" immediately comes to mind. I love his
solos - he typically plays a few bars of some licks that are very
simple but quite expressive, before he hits you with a searing
crescendo involving a lot of originality. And he'll go on to build
more tension from there before he sets everything on fire (the solo on
"Ain't You Trouble Baby" is a fine example)! Indeed he has a very
effective way of building and releasing tension. I've learned to play
a handful of his solos and themes, which has helped me discover ways to
use bends on draw 3 and draw 6 that I had never conceived of (in
particular, learning to play "Turn Your Damper Down" has helped in
these areas). Both the songs I mentioned are on the "Company Man"
disc.
Happy listening!
