OK here's the lowdown on the Greg Heumann Inline Volume Control.
Firstly let me say that I have no financial interest in this product or
any affiliation with the manufacturers of this product.
This is purely a review of my own experience of this product to enable
others to make an informed decision on whether or not they would like
one.
AB Test
Fender Pro Jr - Turner CX original Turner element - Custom Marine Band
Harp
Fender Pro Jr - Astatic JT30 - Controlled Reluctance element - Custom
Marine Band Harp
Aesthetics
It's very well built and looks sturdy enough to withstand the rigours
of gig use.
It's about the size of a disposable lighter.
Results of AB test
The volume control does cut some of the lows with a crystal element at
low volumes, but Greg admits this anyway.
With the CR element I could tell no discernible difference between
using the volume control inline and playing without it on the overall
tone. I would assume that this is the same with CM & Dynamic elements.
I did think that overall with both mics I had to turn up my amp
slightly to achieve the same volume level that I had when not using the
volume control.
But that's not really a problem and just meant that I was able to
overdrive my amp a little more.
The problems with losing the low end tones of the crystal element could
be fixed by altering your amps tone settings I suppose ( that option
isn't available on the Pro Jr ! ).
I also felt that I experienced the loss of some of the natural sustain
that you get with the crystal elements on the the low end tones.
Customer Service
Greg was quick to reply to my emails and very interested in my opinions
on his volume control.
He includes plenty of information with the volume control that explains
the best way to use it and also tells you that you may experience some
loss of low end tones at low volumes. He also guarantees his product
for 12 months.
The Future
I personally would like to see Greg pursue the problems associated with
crystal elements and see if he can discover a way round them.
Conclusions
I think that this volume control represents good value for money and
also means that you don't have to alter your vintage mics by fitting
volume or on / off controls to them.
To be honest I don't know if i will use it at all of my gigs. But it
will definitely come in handy on those gigs where I have to play at
high volumes. It will enable me to switch off my mic when I am not
using it, thus ensuring no feedback
If you need a volume control or on / off control and don't want to
alter that vintage mic then I would try one of these.
Just one last thought on the crystal problems. I wonder if the Mojo
inline volume control and the original Asataic inline volume control
cuts those low end frequencies as well ?

yeah there is a slight loss of bottom end from the mojo inline(with a
crystal element in) much the same as Greg's i suspect, but Greg's vol pot
looks
better thought out, construction wise i mean, i had three all in from the
guys
at mojo hand, cos where the switchcraft connector joins the barrel it was
shaky and although they replaced it without hesitation a year or so down
the line
the one i have now is much the same now starting to shake and loosen, also
the mojo hand in line vol is a good wee bit dearer than the heumann vol, so
i
may look into one in the near future, but hopefully with the addition of
our
new piano player our overall volume will drop a wee bit more and i'll be
sorted! now where is that upright bass player got to? any of you fine
american
chaps fancy joining a cool scottish blues band in a very cold climate with
very little to do, no real cash for your playing , lots of rain, a rough,
tough
dialect to get used to, man who could refuse all that !!!!!

Hi,
Was interested in posting the information about Rod Piazza's class on the
other harmonica message boards. I don't frequent them so if someone could
inform me about the names and how to get on them I would appreciate it.
Having a nice response to my post on Rod's class and thought it would be a
good idea to let the other players know about it.
Thanks,

I just got a Bushman Soul's Voice in Low D, and there are things I like
about it and things I don't. The blow bending lives up to the hype...it is
beautiful and easy to do on all holes from 7-10, every step. This is the
first harp I've had that I can fully bend hole 10. On the other hand, I
haven't achieved a stable overblow yet, on any hole. I'm also having
trouble getting even the first step of draw bending on holes 1-3. I realize
this may be due to the low tuning and not the make of the harp, but I can
hear a lot of air leaking. Being that all my other harps have been Lee
Oskars and Hohners, I'm wondering if the maintenance for Bushmans is any
different? Does anyone have recommendations for how to seal this thing up?
(My goal is to play "Amazing Grace" in 2nd position like Jason Ricci does on
his Low D, but that requires full control of hole 3, and right now I have
none on this harp...I can play the song on my regular D Special 20, but it's
just not as magical in the higher octave.)

Here's a question for UK members! Who's the guy playing very tasty
harmonica for one of the couples in the final of Strictly Dance Fever on
BBC1? I wish to emphasise to all that I was NOT watching the programme
myself - my wife called me into the other room to hear the harp player!

Steve Shaw responds:
"Hi Elizabeth
I've had tinnitus for 15 years, and about 10 years ago I had lots of tests,
and thankfully I have a type of tinnitus that's not associated with hearing
loss. I have two permanent sounds in my right ear, one very high-pitched
and the other a low rumble. They are there all the time. I'm no great
believer in mind-over-matter, but in this particular instance it has worked
for me. I emphasise that I'm speaking very personally, and what works for
me is not the basis of advice for anyone else. But I decided that this
scourge was for me and me alone to conquer. Tinnitus support groups and
the
like are just not for me. I now live quite happily with it, though
absolute
silence is a luxury I can rarely afford! Harp content - listening to and
playing music are exceptionally therapeutic. Playing especially!

........I hear you, Steve, and can't disagree at all. I'm not a joiner
either, much preferring to take care of my physical problems myself as much
as
possible. But a lot of folks had the spelling of tinnitus wrong and I
thought
if others wanted to do the research it'd be easier to provide what I'd
already found. I do like the idea of drowning those noises out with music
<G> -
that's probably what keeps you practicing to be as good a harpist as you
are.
Great incentive!
Even without tinnitus, I have music playing all the time at home. Couldn't
imagine life without it. I did want to add that certain medications can
also
cause tinnitus and muffled hearing so for some folks it's a Catch-22
situation and I knew someone other than my Dad who suffered terribly
because of the
noises. It is a serious and horrible problem for far too many people. I'm
thankful I'm not among their ranks, yet.

Thanks for the review, Paul. Just an aside: for those looking for the
specific function of
having an on/off without altering a vintage mike, I've been exclusively
using the Planet
Waves instrument cable with the built in on/off. It works great -- silent
on/off and silent
switching of microphones. I have no financial interest in the planet waves

You can buy replacement reed plates for the Hohner MS Blues Harp. (Unlesss
it's a really old Blues Harp that is put together with nails.)
It sin't the same as a Marine Band. The MS harps are slightly longer
(1/4"?) than the nandmade harps.
