The "Patriot Act" (he, he, he) says you need a machine-readable passport as 
per link below or a Visa. There is a sample passport on the page with OCR 
characters. Apparently Bush has delayed this requirement to October 26, 2005 
by passing a law (see page below). I guess the airline you are using is 
overly patriotic :-)
