Seeing pot settings in the dark:

It seems to me that I have seen the following solution to the problem but I 
can't remember where.

If the numbers were on the translucent (milk-white) skirt of the knob, then 
one small LED behind each skirt would illuminate the number that gives the 
pot setting as a black number on a bright field.  The other numbers don't 
matter and can remain in the dark.
