Its kinda easy to rate his abilities against a difficulty to play
level nowadays,in which case it could be argued that it wasn't the
most technically complicated ,but consider trying to come up
with/compose his lines de novo.
He played harp as opposed to riffs.

Technique be damned--he was a musician not a technician-- unlike some
current harp heroes. Tone, feelong, and phrasing were what made him
great. I saw him play in Toronto a week before he died and even with
that monkey on his back, he could make me laugh and cry and touch the
deepest parts of my soul--that's a musician.
