Hi Dave, unfortunately not many diatonic players are into doing a LEAD
melody part (PLUS bridge), but I have been using the altered 5 & 9
layout for years because, while I don't play much Chicago style blues,
I DO play a lot of pop, doo-wop, standards, country, cajun, & Delta
blues on them. I follow the Don Les school of thought as to diatonics
and have always done that decades before I even knew who Don Les WAS.
Try playing "la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la - means, I Love You" on
anything other than a country or melody maker tuned. The 1-4-5 REALLY
rules. Ask Jerl Welsh (one of the finest country tuned players I know).
