[Harp-L] Meteor Amps
Hi all. I posted the below description to Harp talk the other day and
thought that I sent it here as well. Obviously
I didn't so here goes. The Meteor amp is now on the market. If you have
questions that are not answered below, please feel
free to e-mail or call me and I'll be glad to answer them as promptly as
possible.
Thanks,
Scooter
The spec's are........
Tubes
4 x 6V6 power tubes, 5AR4 rectifier, 3 x 12AY7 preamp
Speakers
1 x 12" AND 2 x 10" Weber's
Size
22-3/4" W x 25" H x 9" tapering to 11" deep (makes for a great monitor)
Output - 50 watt's
The tone on this amp is unlike any other. There
are 2 channels, both with their own
individual characteristics. Instead of 1 & 2 they are labeled meaty and
meatier. The meaty channel is very
Bassman like but with much more bite when you want it. You can go from clean
to dirty with minimal effort
and adjustment. The control's in this channel are Vol., Tone, Mid,
Presence. They adjust similar to a Bassman
but there is a bit more user friendly range in the mid and presence.
Remember this is designed for harp, not
guitar. Every tiny little adjustment can make a huge tonal change with a
harp. The meatier channel is the first channel tied
to the second internally (like using a jumper in a Bassman). The design of
the 2nd channel however is a bit
different from the 1st. The combination of the 2 is quite incredible. When
Kim Wilson first played through it in Troy
Gonyea's living room he told me that I captured the sound combination that
he's spent thousands trying to find.
In the meatier channel all of the control's work the same as the meaty
channel with the addition of the meat control.
This control is the cat's ass. Once you have a tone you like, you can vary
the actual volume of the bottom end
without changing the tone settings that you like. I'm sure that your used to
making your amp too bright in some cases
just to cut through the mix. Not any more. This puppy cut's through with a
great even range. The first time that
Rick Estrin heard it I pointed out that it was the only amp on stage that
was not mic'd. Right then and there he
told me that he wanted it. I often have to tell people at jam's or who sit
in at my gig's to turn it down. I built it
to compete with a local guitar player who used to love to drown out all of
us harp players. He's now put yellow
jacket's in his amps to decrease the output because he lost the war. The
speakers are Weber's. He designed 3
different speakers for me. I guess to put it into the easiest comparative
terms the 12 is similar in design to a P12Q.
The 10's to P10R & P10Q. All 3 speakers are designed differently to accent a
different range if you will (high, mid & low).
The amp weighs in at just under 50 lbs. and the cab is solid pine. The
construction of the cab is all dovetailed joints. I
chose this method over finger jointing due to the superior strength of a
dovetail joint. The prototype has been
shipped and gigged for almost 3 years now. We beat the hell out of it and
other than the stains and the autograph's
on it, it's the same as when I first built it. That brings me to the inside.
The trannies are all custom built to my spec's by
Heyboer Transformers. The circuit is hand made right from cutting the boards
out of a sheet and drilling out each
eyelet one at a time. The resistors are all carbon comp, cap's are Mallory
150 series or Sprague for the electrolytic's &
I use cloth wire throughout except for the signal wires. These are shielded
cable. Lastly the price. I think that everyone
will soon agree that this is the hottest harp amp out right now and it's
priced at only $1550 + shipping. Most 15 watt
boutique amps with a single 10" speaker go for about that. For those who
read this and order prior to October 1st, the
price will be $1400 + shipping. My turn around time right now is inside of 2
weeks. If the orders start flying in that could
increase up to 4 weeks. Obviously the first orders will ship the soonest so
don't hesitate.
Thanks,
Scott Berberian
