Ben...............Try playing in front of an SM 57 vocal mic.  The mic should 
be on a stand and plugged into the PA.  The PA will make you loud enough, in 
the mix.  You should be able to hear yourself in the monitors.  You can get a 
lot of dynamics by varying the distance between you and the mic, and of course 
by your hand movements.  Move in on the mic for your solos, back away for 
background parts.
