this is going to sound like harp-l is a shill for
Jerry Portnoy, but he does talk about splits like this
on his Masterclass CDs, and uses a couple in exmaple
pieces. i think he calls them "special octaves" or
"special intervals" or something. just for fun, try
doing splits like that all over your harp. or try
playing a five-hole octave split on notes where you
don't get an actual octave (like say, the
2draw/6draw). i hit upon a neat one like that last
night, though off the top of my head i don't remember
the holes exactly.
one of the ways LW used it (i know this from hearsay
on the list, not actual experience) is as a "shimmer"
(hope i'm using the right term), where he shifts his
tongue back and forth, alternating quickly between
holes 2 and 4 (as an example). it can be a very cool
effect.
