Reed gap and attack
Hi
I have been trying to adjust the reed-gaps in my harps so
they are suited to my playing but lately I find I am having
a problem with one particular song - it is a trad called
John Henry. There is a point in the song where for effect
one has to mimic the steel driving on the harp - naturally this
requires a very, very sharp attack on holes 1-2-3 (draw).
Since the 2-draw is notoriously prone to 'jam up' I am
tempted to gap it wide, but I suspect I will lose the
response I have with the narrower gap. What is the best
solution ? a) Incessant practise b) 2 harps with different
gaps c) change of technique ? The version I am trying to
learn from is the Sonny Terry/Brownie McGhee version.
Thanks in advance,
Shankar.
I just realized I have never tried the above with a tongue-block -
maybe therein lies the solution.
