Brendan Power/Temple Bar Blues Festival
At the moment the Guinness-sponsored Temple Bar blues festival is on.
I saw Brendan Power play on Friday (by accident, I was expecting Robert
Lucas) and was blown away. He gave a workshop yesterday which was
wonderful where he explained some of his tunings and techniques. The
most interesting thing is his "jaw-flick" which he uses fro Irish trad
tunes as a fluent way of changing note. The idea is that he moves his lower
jaw sideways to get an adjacent hole.
Later on he played at an acoustic venue and had an impromptu jam with a
local harp-hero which left the crowd gasping and the harpfans humbled.
He is also a thoroughly nice guy and his CD is bloody excellent.
