Re: Mosaic Connection
Hi,
I can not tell you much, but it may be a help if you keep
this in mind.
This is the time of year (along with Christmas) that servers all over
the world are taken out of service for upgrades and maintainance.
Some are down for a week or even more, some go up and down like yo-yos.
(I think Americans call them return tops)?
A socket failure may only mean that your server van not reach the place
it's trying for. It may or may not know why, depending on the bits of
software being used.
If you have an FTP site address for it, try that. FTP site address and path
can be found by pointing gopher at the site, NOT pressing the return key,
but then pressing the = key instead.
This provides the technical data, copy the site address down.
Then (if you are using unix) type:-
ping ftp.site address <ret>
You will get a message saying something like
"ftp.site.address is alive".
or "no response from host" or even "host unreachable"
Failing that tyr and ftp to the site, even if you cann't log on,
you will know if the site is up or not.
Sometimes the mosiac or gopher link is down, but the ftp one is still
running. I use this technique now and a agian, so I know it *can* work
*SOMETIMES*.
Hope this helps.
Gordon
