Toots & Octaves.
On Sunday morning I saw a Good Morning America-type show which did a
piece on Toots. He played a bit and it sounded great and they showed him
playing with the Brazil project band too. What was funny was at his home
he explained to the interviewer the difference between the diatonic and
chromatic harmonica and played a little on each. His diatonic playing
was just awful! Now it is well known how much he despises playing the
diatonic (similar to Howard Levy's aversion to the chromatic), but
hearing him trying to play it was rather illuminating!
By the way the diatonic harmonica has a 3 octave range (not 2 as
previously posted). The chromatic harmonica comes in a variety of ranges
from 3 to 4 to more. The models and their octave ranges are better
described by a chromatic player.
