Smo-joe is correct that you play first before eating. However, at
times you are asked to play after dinner is served and you have no power
to change the program already printed.

Hi Kenny. It seems that if I eat first before a long performance (more than 13 min), I not only feel too full all the way up my stomach and into my chest (remember, I am kinda thin), but I have trouble keeping my lips & mouth wet. It seems I had used up all the moisture in my mouth while eating and the saliva that IS present is way too thick for my liking. Then the mouthpiece starts to stick, then I can feel the slide slowing down. Since I am a TB er, this is non good.

I guess the feeling full deal is prevalent with harmonica players more than others because we breathe IN also. Sometimes, like at Buckeye, where a couple of my tunes were in Eb and required a lot of DRAW notes, I would fill up with air and that would force against my rib cage. Had I eaten, I might have been in distress from the pressure.

I never had a problem with a horn as all the air is blown OUT. I noticed that when your lungs are empty, you can always manage a slight bit more air OUT of them, but when they are full, you can't force more IN. Ahhh, anthropology.

In the case of pizza, as a quadroon ( 3/4 'Goombah') I find the spices in pizza to REALLY deaden the mouth and tongue. The cheese is especially moisture attracting, as is the salt, tomato, etc.

If you noticed that at Birmingham, Charley McCoy was sitting over in the corner and was able to eat because he wasn't going on for 2 hours. His entree was chicken, so that's not so bad. Had it been LaSagna, 'nother story.

Instead of fighting, I try to go
to bathroom after a meal and look at a mirror and rinse mouth several
times. I carry a small Butler Proxabrush(K-Mart or Walmart or any drug
store) and use it if necessary. I find flossing or brushing teeth is too
time consuming and inconvenient in public place.

That's where I have an advantage. Since my accident, I wear false teeth. :)
