Hi Neil -

I'll just mention that I started on chromatic at age 5 and did not find it difficult to start that way. Just don't use the button until you're comfortable with the C scale (assuming you'd be starting on a C chrom). 

I'm not up on all the teaching sites, but for a beginner, I'd highly recommend a teacher, either in person or on line.
