I would recommend this step too. Buy a matched set of tubes if your pre-amp
has more than one. Also, play with your volume settings. If you have a
chain with multiple gain controls (e.g. mic volume, amp volume, effect
volume) try using lower gain earlier in the chain and making up the volume
later in the chain. Don't play too close or directly in front of your amp.
Everything gets worse with the band, so work on stage positioning. I have
solved all my problems this way without having to pay for extra
squeal-killing effect boxes, so I can't offer any recommendations on them.
