Steve Guyger occasionally does it. 
I don’t think everyone can master it unless you have mastered your tone from within.  It may come across sounding weak with poor projection IMHO. 

You put a bullet mic to the side of your throat under the chin and make a guttural sound. Placement is important as you can impede your throat from making the “ou, ou,” sound. 

Steve is so good at it he can play bass lines using the mic against the side of his throat.
