I agree.  The amount of breath lost through even sizable leaks is imperceptible to the player.  However the leakage of the alternating sound pressure dampens the embouchure resonance and is perceptible to the player.   To get a feel for the difference, just valve a diatonic.   Although you lose 2-reed bending, you can tell the difference in responsiveness.    

However, that doesn’t change the fact that the leakage of both breath and sound through the opening reed is huge compared with the leakage under the plates.
