You could have the cover plates sand blasted. Whoever does the sand 
blasting (e.g., headstone manufacturer, automobile engine parts 
re-builder) could avoid the front where there is contact with the lips 
and concentrate on the rear aspects of the cover plates where your 
fingers contact the covers.

Turboharp covers, though smooth and not textured, have a contoured shape 
that fits the hand nicely and may afford a better grasp. I don't care 
for them myself but the good Dr. Antaki might be able to apply a texture 
in his manufacturing process.
