It would depend on what kind of a sound/style youâre going for to some extent. 

For instance, Stevie Wonder doesnât generally hold a mic, he plays in front of one on a stand and it suites his style well (he doesnât cup the harp).

Most jazz players do something similar to what Toots Thielemans does, which is to hold a Sure SM58 mic inside his somewhat cupped hands very close to the harmonica, taking advantage of the proximity effect of the vocal mic to warm up his sound:

Youâll notice that Toots mostly holds the mic near the bottom octave with his left hand (not always), thatâs pretty common since the high notes are plenty loud. However Gregoire Maret does the opposite, and gets a great sound too.

Regardless, I urge you to experiment and see what works best for you as thereâs no one correct way.
