Re: [Harp-L] Copper/Stainless Steel Combs for Marine Band and Golden Melody
I don't miss the weight of metal combed harmonicas. Regarding the
sound, the reed work and the cover plate shapes are the large influence
on harmonica sounds. What was nice about metal combs is that they were
very flat and the reed plates mounted with no air leakage. There are
now other technologies that achieve similar air tight reed plate
mountings and they weigh less and also are less expensive.
I would think that copper might be vulnerable to distortion, it's quite
deformable and I'd also wonder about it's machine-ability. I've never
seen a copper comb. fjm
