[Harp-L] Re: Light box for reed work

For me, there are times for both a microscope and the light box depending on the task. I can really see the detail under the microscope and have caught & fixed many reeds that were hitting the slot as a result of well intentioned DIY embossing or being off center out of the box, that were not as easily seen under the light box.

I actually have the opposite problem as Chris mentioned and get some neck pain if I spend too much time under (um- over) the microscope, and will switch over to the light box for the bigger picture and some relief.

The "Artograph Light Tracer" light box was recommended to me by Jon Harl and works great. I find it helps me center when attaching new wind savers too. The light can shine up and make an under shadow of the reed slot beneath the new wind saver.

Still one of the coolest ones I've ever seen was Richard Sleigh's prototype which he described in an earlier post. I'm considering taking apart an old Kalimba and cutting a slot for a light to fit inside as a quick way to achieve similar aural feedback when plinking reeds.

The reason I quit using my light box several years ago was because I went to
using a stereo microscope. The way I was doing them before would cause me a lot
of neck pain so that was my original reason for switching, ...
