Re: [Harp-L] Need Harp recomendations
If you like the Marine Band design, but don't want an actual Marine Band, then I suggest the Seydel 1847 Classic. It has the same style comb and covers as the Hohner Marine Band, with stainless steel reeds and a wooden comb. If you prefer a plastic comb, then the Seydel 1847 Silver has the same configuration as the 1847 Classic with a polymer comb.
The Seydel Harp Configurator can be used to specify the initial standard tuning (Richter, Tonleiter [Solo], Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Country, Orchestra, PowerBender, PowerDraw, Paddy Richter, Melody Maker, Easy 3rd / Do it!, Whole Tone, Circular [Spiral], Diminished, Augmented, Bebop Tuning, Four Key, Dorian). The Harp Configurator then provides 3 tuning systems: Compromised, Just Intonation or Equal Temperament.
Both of those models have replacement reed plates available which are configurable just like the entire harmonica. Individual reeds are also available for a reasonable price.
The stainless steel reeds supposedly last 3-5 times longer than brass reeds. I have no independent empirical data to support that assertion. I am sure that those reeds will not fail sooner than brass reeds, solely on the fatigue characteristics of the two metals.
I have a Low E Seydel Steel Session (with stainless steel reeds) that has lasted considerably longer than my Seydel Blues Session (with brass reeds). I've never had to even tune it.
I strongly recommend Rockin' Ron's Music 4 Less as my primary source for all things harmonica. He is faster responding than any other vendor I have ever tried, and he has some of the lowest prices available anywhere. He also is a delight to talk to on the phone.

The usual disclaimer: No financial or other connection to Seydel or Rockin' Ron's in any way; just a very satisfied Seydel and Rockin' Ron's customer.
