Yeh, you are probably right. They had limited time to show off their bop
chops. All the more reason for Van den Brink to focus on showing off his
melodic chops during his own solo and showing off his comping chops during
Toot's solo.  And when it comes to comping less is usually (almost always
in jazz) more. In fact, in an ensemble setting which includes a bass player
I would rather that the pianist forget that they even have a left hand. Use
it for something more constructive ... like throwing cymbals at sax players
that play too many notes.
