The best delay I've ever played is the Moog MF-104. To me it's the most musical sounding delay, being more like a full instrument I. It's own right than an "effect". This is not to say it has a sharp learning curve, it doesn't, rather it just responds brilliantly.
A less expensive option is their MF Delay from their minifooger line:
