Why not teach him songs that lie best in second and third, without telling him that it's a different position? Make sure that they're tunes that use modal notes that are easier to play in those positions than to create by bending or overblowing in first position.

For third position, maybe Joshua fit de Battle of Jericho or Scarborough Fair.

For second, maybe Old Joe Clark, or that old-fashioned walking bass line that goes (in scale degrees) 1 3 5 6 b7 6 5 4, or the tag line from "Love Me Do" - plenty of possibilities exist.
