I am suggesting that you read " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American_Vernacular_English " which pertains to that which you have mislabeled as "a humiliating recreation of what he thinks of as black peoples' speech":

'Dillard quotes a recollection of "slave language" toward the latter part of the 18th century: "Kay, massa, you just leave me, me sit here, great fish jump up into da canoe, here he be, massa, fine fish, massa; me den very grad; den me sit very still, until another great fish jump into de canoe; but me fall asleep, massa, and no wake 'til you come..." '

My recreation of that vernacular which was used long into the 19th century during the Civil War and as that vernacular would have been referenced to the harmonica (including "blews" as the past-tense of "blows") then is quite accurate.
