Worth noting that Walter often begins a tune on chromatic and switches to diatonic for the solo. Not very different in effect from the position-switching that Charlie Musselwhite uses on many of his performance, some of which involve chromatic/diatonic switches; it puts a new sound in the mix and wakes the audience up.
