At a couple of open mic events, we heard musicians who made a mistake, but
choked on it.
I encourage all students to gain the habit early, of NOT stopping.
Had they practiced not stopping, they would have moved on thru the tough
spot on stage.
First, the mechanical skills and form the memory
A. Linear
Without regard for rhythm and timing
Learn the notes in sequence
Slowly link notes together
Then commit to a strict tempo, as slowly as needed, but perfect!
B. At Tempo
Strict tempo
Play through mistakes
Recover place quickly
If you will practice this way and learn at home, you will be much more
comfortable to recover when a flub does occur in performance. Surely
increases the joy of music!
Teachers, what other ideas will help?
