Subject: [Harp-L] Custom Combs by Andrew Zajac

I like custom combs. Part of it is aesthetic. I like my harmonicas to look
unique. Part of it is that I buy harps as cheaply as I can and this is a
good upgrade to hollow plastic combs. Primarily it is because I like how
the harmonicas sound/feel with a solid comb. They are brighter and
livelier. I am not saying this is how they sound to the audience but it is
how I experience them. My guess is it is the vibration that I feel with my
ears. I play more confidently when the harp sound/feels more lively.

So I have tried many combs. I have wood, aluminum, corian and acrylic. I
like aluminum and corian the best. I bought some harps from that cheap
seller on Amazon and wanted to replace the combs. At the same time I came
across harp.andrewzajac.ca/Combs. I sent Andrew and email because I also
wanted a comb for a Hering Blues that I had tuned minor and it was not
listed as an option. THe web site says he is willing to make anything.
After a conversation back and forth I sent him a scan of the comb and reed
plates and within a week I had two suzuki and one hering earth-friendly,
high-performance combs at my door. The material is smooth and solid. I
installed them all and they all fit perfectly with some wiggle room to get
the comb face where I wanted it. They were all just what I like in a comb.

I would say that these combs are as good as the best combs I have bought
and they are less expensive than any equivalent combs currently on the
market. The service was also friendly, helpful and quick. Andrew also makes
more varieties of make/model than any I have seen, plus he will custom make
a comb if he does not have the template.

If you are looking to buy custom combs, I would check out
harp.andrewzajac.ca/Combs. He also builds custom harps and provides
harmonica service and repair.
