Re: [Harp-L] Groove v Swing
So the way I see it, you have a choice. Tell yourself: The groove in
indescribable. I have a pretty good feel for music and time, even my
girlfriend says so. I'll just feel it and everything will come together.
Or you can say, Although the concept of groove is indescribable, a lot of
people seem to think it has to do with timing. I know how to improve my
timing. Practice with a metronome and drummer's book and take lessons that
force me to learn to be intentional with my timing. I think my timing is
great, and my girlfriend says so, but last I checked, I didn't get the call
for that Steely Dan recording (OK, Will Galison, you did. We know.) Maybe
I should practice my ass off just in case it MIGHT help me with the groove.
I may not be a Zen master, but my timing is better than it was a year ago.
