They were originally called Fake Books....years ago they circulated amongst the jazz community and they were slightly illegal, as they didn't pay any royalty rights to the powers that be....


The Real Book is a legitimate fake book in which the lawyers dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's before publishing the music.

Are they actually titled "Fake Book"? If so, that's interesting because in the 
jazz realm, there's a big book of jazz standards called "The Real Book" that 
jazz troupes carry like a bible.
