[Harp-L] Harmonica Players at Wintergrass Festival + 2 New Vids

Just returned from a great time at Wintergrass in Bellevue WA. This year there were quite a few harmonica players at the jams. Besides great shows and workshops, there was jamming day and night all over the hotel. The jams were mostly bluegrass, but I also joined some fine Gypsy jazz jams, Western swing jams, and an old-timey jam. Except for bluesy bluegrass tunes such as Bluegrass Stomp, I didn't hear any blues jams. Once again, I seemed to be the only chromatic player, and many puzzled folks asked me what type of harmonica I was playing and how it worked. My C chromatic served me well except for an ultrafast version of the bluegrass instrumental, Rebecca, that is always played in B.

There were a lot of videos being taken at Wintergrass, so I'll see if I'm on any that get posted. But here are 2 vids I recently posted to YouTube--a bluegrass medley and a swing version of Exactly Like You. The bluegrass medley is with the same young hotshots--Scott Gates and Alex Finazzo--as the "Old Dangerfield" video I recently shared on Harp-L. The tunes are St. Anne's Reel, Whiskey Before Breakfast, Angeline the Baker, and Soldier's Joy. We figured out the tunes we would play, but it was our unrehearsed first and only take.

This swing version of "Exactly Like You" was videotaped at an impromptu house jam. Steve Trovato is on my right and his USC guitar student, Armen Movsesyan, on my left. Our styles are very different, but it was a lot of fun playing with these fine musicians.

In 2011, Steve Trovato did a gorgeous guitar break on my recording of Blue Violet Waltz.
