[Harp-L] Born in Chicago (the movie)

Caught "Born in Chicago" the other night. Basically the story of the
1st wave of white blues enthusiasts in Chicago who went into the inner city
blues joints, were befriended and mentored by black bluesmen, and learned
the music first-hand. Of interest to harmonica players; Charlie Musselwhiteand
Corky Siegel both tell their own personal stories in detail. Paul
Butterfield is also nicely profiled at length. There are glimpses of Big
Walter Horton, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Howlin' Wolf, Mojo Buford,
Norton Buffalo, and probably some harpists I missed. Nick Gravenites, Mike
Bloomfield, Harvey Mandel, Steve Miller, and Barry Goldberg are also
profiled. Marshall Chess does the narrating and, for reasons unknown to
me, Jack White is used as one of the commentators.
There are a few clips of a reunion concert that is a bit too "boogie
blues-ish" for my liking; but the old photos, home movies, and personal
remembrances really make the movie work. One of the themes that resonated
with me was the incredible hospitality shown to these kids in the blues
joints. I used to hit these clubs in my youth and was always made to feel
at home by the folks inside. Now the walk back to the car at 3:00am was
never fun, but I saw some great jazz and blues shows. Those were the days.
So I recommend the movie. It's a very pleasant way to spend 90 minutes
if you have the opportunity.
