It depends on your style but pretty much anything goes really.
You can check out some of my sonic experiments with rack harp at
http://www.sonicviz.com/music/ktblues/
On these tracks I use a Hohner G3Tguitar (since 1991) for slide/fingerstyle
and Lee Oskar harps on a custom designed rack with a Retro Rocket mic going
into a HarpCommander III and NI Guitar Rig. I only play open and altered
tunings, not regular, so use guitar software to quickly work out new chords
, scales etc when I have a new idea to try.
Recently I switched to a Hohner FlexRack and a stock Strnad Mic with HCIII
and Zoom G3 for HarpFX.
With the right patches on the G3 (takes a little work) I find the stock
Strnad mic is fine as I range across the sound spectrum, not just restrict
myself to a "Chicago Blues" sound. Having a neutral mic actually helps for
this, but I still managed to get a reasonable dirty blues patch or 2
happening as well.
The FlexRack is great imo, more tension than my custom rack (hacked up from
3 different racks) and more comfortably adjustable.
I like Lee Oskars due to the cost effectiveness and alternate tunings
available. Although I normally use 2nd position, I also use 1st, 3rd and 4th
from a stock tuning and also dip into Harmonic Minor, Natural Minor and
Melody Maker for some tunes.
It's actually why I originally wrote http://harpninja.com so I could work
out tunes faster and which harp might be best for a new idea.
I also use a Roland Cube Street for my main amp now.
My 2 yen!
