[Harp-L] 4th tips

I believe that Michael Rubin is correct in his definition of position as
not being limited to using the low hanging fruit of the modal scale
associated with the position, but using position as applying to all scales
starting on the note (A in the case of 4th position on a C harp). Position
is not just using the modal opportunities inherent in the harmonica.
Position is related to the circle of 5ths/4ths.

Using the white keys on a keyboard you can play the modes, but by using the
black keys (on harmonica bends and overbends) you can play a variety of
scales for any given starting note (position).

However, the lazy man's/woman's approach to harmonica position often is to
take advantage of the modal opportunities to minimize the use of bends and
overblows, and to play the scale associated with the mode (1st-Ionian,
2nd-Mixolydian, 3rd Dorian, 4th Aeolian, 5th Phrygian, etc.).

So a lot of players use 3rd, 4th, and 5th for minor keys as suits their
taste and their ability because in those positions minor scales lay easily
on the harp with minimal bending/overbending. Additionally, you can use
2nd position for minors, too, but you have to be careful, bend accurately,
and skip notes that don't fit.

I tend to not use 3rd, 4th, and 5th for major keys, but given technique and
practice, it is quite possible. Michael Rubin has a lot of good material
in his meat and potatoes series of videos!
