I was very pleased to read Richard Hunter's praise of Taj Mahal. Taj's
harp playing rarely gets mentioned here on Harp-L and that's a shame. I
consider him one of the greatest harp players of the 60's and he continues
to play wonderfully. I rank him right up there with Alan "BlindOwl"
Wilson, Paul Butterfield and Jack Bruce as my biggest influences. I've
been privileged to count him as my friend for many years. But its rare
to
see him play much harp these days. One of those rare occasions happened at
the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago with the "Tuba Band" that Richard
referred to. Taj has about 4 or 5 different bands, but most frequently
he
tours with the "Taj Mahal Trio", with Billy Rich on bass (Billy was also
Butterfield's bassist in the "Better Days" band!) and Kester Smith on
drums. In that configuration Taj almost never plays harp.
Taj is one of those players who has a unique, immediately identifiable
sound. I wish I could emulate it. (He's even tried to help me in that
regard.) But his tone, rhythm, attack and musical intelligence is
something
that few, if any, can begin to approach. He doesn't play rapidly, he
doesn't play long phrases, he doesn't overblow, sometimes he's not even
very precise. But man, does he always sound great and leaving you wishing
for more.

Try playing America the Beautiful in first position on the lower octave.

I know how to bend. I'm looking at interesting scales that would require

bend right on.
Any tips for ear training?

Hi fellow Harp-lers
I cannot locate Wally Petermans email address in my computer. I need to
contact him so if anyone can let him know or send me his address off list
I would appreciate it. He will too.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi harmonica friends! If you didn't see my previous e-mail about this,
please take a minute to fill out my survey on alternate tunings!
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zs3sI0YuX1TBZ7divuxs5D0TZyyZxZE2x6yp3xLwcz8/viewform
I've gotten 36 survey participants so far, and the results can be viewed
here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zs3sI0YuX1TBZ7divuxs5D0TZyyZxZE2x6yp3xLwcz8/viewanalytics
So far, it looks like "Scales", "Chords", and "Natural Notes" are the
biggest reasons for choosing/creating a particular tuning system, and that
"Overbends", "Novelty", and "Octaves" are the least important. Also, it
looks like most folks have tried 3 or 4 alternate tunings, but a fair
number of us crazy folks have tried 10 or more! :)
FYI, I'd like to get at least a hundred participants so that the results
will be as statistically significant as possible*. So, please consider
participating if you've got a sec! It won't take longer than 2 minutes,
and any and everyone - regardless of age or stage - is welcome to
participate!
Thanks everyone!

*I'm guessing that there are
about 10,000 relatively serious harmonica players in the Western world,
and so 100 responses would get me about a 1% sample... BTW, anyone know
how many Harp-L members there are? How about SPAH members?

harmonicas).
Dear harmonica friends,
Please take a moment and fill out this survey I
created about alternate tuning systems for single-reed ("diatonic")
harmonicas... I love alternate tunings, and my purpose with this survey
is simply to generate and share knowledge with the harp community. It's
quick, anonymous, and the results will be available to all!

Thank you!

Jim,
My simplest practice technique is to play all the notes in hole 3, in
order, forwards and backwards, with different start points
-3 -3' -3'' -3''' +3
That way you can hear if the bent note isn't 'right' compared to its
neighbours. Playing forwards and backwards and starting at different
places gets you hitting the right note straight away, without having to
'hunt'.
Works to a lesser degree on holes 2 and 1
Cheers
Maka

That's a good one Maka. How are you starting the note? with the tongue
making a 'T' sound? One thing I've found very useful in practice is to
stop
my automatic throat vibrato, and concentrate on the pitch,
rather than trying to dress up the inaccuracy with lots of wobble.

I've put together some photos of my work, tagged with instrument owners
and
comments on what I did and how. Plus basic inso on the tuning ("Notes"
section). All packed up clean and nice.

Rick,
You're making me think about what I do, 'cause I'm not sure - I just do
it.
At the moment I'm focusing on pitch while minimising effort - trying to
ensure the bent notes are as accurate, quiet (which I think is an imprtant
thing to aim for with bent notes) and 'un-strained' as the unbent ones. I
haven't thought much about articulation, but that would be a good thing to
roll into the exercise.
I started a lip purser and am doing more and more tongue blocking, but the
TB bends aren't as good as the pucker bends yet, so improving my TB bends
(they're not yet 'gigworthy') gets worked into my practice too.
